Widespread usage in industrial filtration is triggering the demand for PTFE membranes

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene that has a wide range of industrial applications. It is a fluorocarbon compound comprising carbon and fluorine and has a high molecular weight. The substance is hydrophobic, which implies that it resists water and water-containing substances. PTFE is extensively used as a non-stick coating for cookware such as pans and woks. It is non-reactive due to the robust strength of carbon-fluorine bonds; therefore, it is widely used to make containers and pipework for corrosive, reactive chemicals. When used as a lubricant for heavy machinery, PTFE reduces friction, energy consumption, and wear-and-tear. One of the most well-known brand names of PTFE-based formulas is Teflon by The Chemours Company (a spin-off from DuPont).

PTFE membranes and laminates are extensively used in the manufacturing industry as they provide a consistent, temperature-controlled, and chemically compatible barrier to bacteria microbes. PTFE membranes offer a wide spectrum of advantages as they are naturally hydrophobic, highly compatible with acids and aggressive solutions, and feature enhanced durability. Some of the typical applications of PTFE membranes include filtration of acids and aggressive solutions, venting, aerosol samplings, and phase separations.

The global PTFE membrane market is poised to witness fast-paced growth over the upcoming years. The global market is spread across some of the major regions of the world. The Asia Pacific region is touted as the largest market for PTFE membranes, India, China, Japan, and Indonesia as its major growth engines. The rapidly amplifying demand for PTFE membranes across pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries in the region is a key growth propeller for the regional market. Europe and North America are the other regions poised to witness substantial growth in the years to come. The market growth is supported by several vital factors, such as the increasing wastewater treatment activities, burgeoning demand for cost-effective and efficient PTFE membranes, rapidly growing urbanization, surging investments in industrial filtration, and new product launches. PTFE membranes are in high demand across oil & gas, manufacturing, chemical, textile, pharmaceutical, and food & beverage industries, which bolsters the global PTFE membrane market expansion.

Stringent regulations regarding industrial emissions, wastewater treatment, and municipal and industrial waste management are expected to further boost the market growth. For instance, various sustainability mandates and emission control acts have been imposed in several countries to lower environmental threats. The U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia have upgraded their emission standards to decrease atmospheric pollution levels. Moreover, in Europe, the E.U. Drinking Water Directive (DWD) has proposed specific water purification regulations to maintain the purity of drinking. Some of the leading companies operating in this market are Merck Millipore (U.S.), Cytiva (U.S.), Pall (U.S.), W.L. Gore (U.S.), Markel (U.S.), Corning (U.S.), Donaldson (U.S.), Sartorius (Germany), Saint Gobain (France), and Hyundai Micro (South Korea). In July 2020, Merck Millipore announced a USD 21.23 million investment for constructing a laboratory facility in Switzerland. The investment is intended to support the company’s rapidly growing materials business and drive product innovation.
